3D Laser Scanning & Automatic extraction software

3D scanning has been transformed over the last few years. Scanners used to weigh 20kg, were controlled by a laptop and have large external batteries. They required a team of technicians to operate and if you wanted a full colour scan you had to take out your camera! It was a considerably skilled operation to scan and register a large area.

These days scanners have become fully automatic and have built in controls/cameras. They are small and portable and have almost become as easy to operate as a 'point and shoot' camera. As 3D Laser scanners have become more automatic the 'added value' is gradually transfering to the point cloud 3D modelling activites.

Tetramec is continually investing in the latest software for 'automatic equipment extraction' from point clouds

Although point clouds carry a huge amount of information they very often need to be converted to CAD models to make full use of the data.

One of Tetramecs unique qualities is that it has approached 3D Laser scanning from an 'engineering design' background (as opposed to the many other companies which have approached it from a 'surveying' background). This means we are well placed to build on our 3D CAD modelling skills, utilising point clouds in the modelling workflow.

Tetramec Ltd. own all their 3D Laser scanners, rather than hiring. This has allowed us to develop our own unique scanning/design workflows. This also gives us flexibility to carry out small jobs where often the scanner hire cost can be prohibitively expensive.

Structural steel work can now be extracted from scanned point clouds.

Tetramec have also embraced the development of sophisticated 'feature extraction' algorithms. These allow the scanning generated 'point clouds' to be automatically transformed into accurate intelligent CAD models.

Tetramec see Laser scanning technologies as a tool to deliver to our customers the best mechanical and process designs, cheaper, quicker and safer.
